USB calculators help you “figure” it out

What’s 175 * 382 + 14? Unless you’re a born numbers whiz, chances are you’ve whipped out a calculator to work it out. (The answer, by the way, is 66864) Calculators enable us to speed through calculations and help eliminate human error that can come from carrying digits to the next place. Basic calculators let us make purchases, set budgets and plan our day to day lives. Meanwhile, advanced machines can help with forecasting trends, examining patterns and plotting complex data sets and formulas.

USB calculators – from screen to spreadsheet

While spreadsheets and number pads on keyboards can now do most of our calculations, many of us still prefer the feel of the calculator in our hands. Meanwhile, those who are taking their work on the go will recognise the limitations of laptop keyboards that don’t have a proper numeric keypad.

Enter the USB calculator, like the Canon LS-120PC II USB Calculator.

This USB calculator has the same look and feel as your traditional machine, but it also has a handy component that plugs straight into your laptop’s USB port. This allows you to send results and calculations straight to your applications, so you can fill out spreadsheets and enter data straight from your calculator keypad. It can also function as a standalone calculator when disconnected from the computer.

A fun calculator trick

Harking back to our primary school days, calculators were more than just a learning tool, they provided a bit of entertainment and fun. Try this math trick to take you back to the days:

Think of a three digit number where the digits are in descending order (ie 432, 951 etc) and enter it into the calculator.
Reverse the digits and subtract it from the first number. (So you would be subtracting 234 from 432).
Add the result to its reverse. (So if you have 198 displayed on your calculator, you’ll be adding this to 891).
Your answer regardless of your starting number will be 1089.

There’s an assortment of calculators out there to suit a variety of tasks. Some will benefit from the use of printing calculators that let you double check your work and help to minimise human error. You’ll find plenty of calculators to suit a wide variety of maths tasks from Canon.
