The ORAC Score and You

If you haven’t heard of an ORAC score before it’s not surprising.  ORAC scores are very useful pieces of information yet most people don’t know about them or what to do with that information. Here are some common questions people have about ORAC.

What does ORAC stand for?

Orac stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity.

What is an ORAC score?

ORAC is a way of measuring antioxidant levels in different foods and chemical substances. The score is expressed in units and the higher the value, the greater the antioxidant power of the food or substance.

What is an antioxidant?

An antioxidant is a substance, such as vitamin E, vitamin C, or beta carotene, that is thought to protect body cells from the damaging effects of oxidation. Many fruits and vegetables contain reasonable amounts of these nutrients.  However, several foods are very high in antioxidants such as green tea, goji berries, and acai berries.

Why are antioxidants beneficial?

Free radicals can cause cell damage that plays a part in a number of chronic diseases, including hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), cancer, and arthritis and also interferes with your immune system.  Because antioxidants protect and repair cells from damage caused by free radicals, fighting off damage with antioxidants helps keep your immune system strong, making you better able to ward off colds, flu, and other infections.

What is a good ORAC score?

The USDA recommends an intake of about 5,000 ORAC units per day to receive the optimum health benefits associated with antioxidants.  The average person is only ingesting about 20%-25% of this recommended amount in his or her daily diet.

How can I get more antioxidants in my diet?

Eating 8-10 servings per day of brightly colored fruits or dark green vegetables will help you achieve the recommended ORAC level in your daily diet.  If this seems unattainable you can always supplement with some sort of vitamin or immune boosting drink.  There are many great products on the market that have been tested and have quite high ORAC scores.
