The Sallie Mae Fund has a long history of supporting student activities and programs which help to further opportunities for youth all over the country. This fund also includes scholarships which are given out each year to those who qualify. Over $ 15 million has been given out to students who have a real financial need and want to pursue a degree in a certain field of study. This scholarship program works closely with the Hispanic College Fund as well as UNCF and the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education to provide a quality education to those who cannot afford to pay for tuition and other costs associated with college.
There are many other things that this fund does for students across the country, including the African American Initiative. It was first created to increase access to a higher education for African American students. It hosts a number of workshops and also provided a national college scholarship directory for those who are in need. Thousands of young people all across the country have benefited from these services and continue to work hard because of the resources provided by this program.
The “Paying for College Bus Tour” is also a large part of what the Sallie Mae Fund does for students who want to go to college but live in poor underprivileged areas. Over the span of just four years, this tour hosted a total of 800 free workshops which were given in both English and Spanish for students who were interested. Many parents and students after attending the workshop said that they believed in the ability to pay for college and gathered important and useful information.
Since 2001 this fund has spent a total of $ 123 million on various student programs and scholarships which are designed to help those who are underprivileged succeed and earn a degree from an accredited college or university. The hundreds of workshops which are conducted each year help to link young people with resources and information regarding how to pay for college and complete their education. The fund has also helped through their program “Building Hope”, a massive endeavor to promote educational reform in the District of Columbia. They have had huge success and made great strides to change the standard of education and help students receive degrees. This program centers around charter schools and has received a grant of $ 28 million to make a difference in this part of the world.
